Can Teeth Be Whitened After Cosmetic or Restorative Work?

If you’ve cosmetic dentistry work done to restore your dazzling smile, you may have some questions about how to go about whitening your teeth.

You’ve already invested in your smile with restorative work. But you’ve noticed that your teeth don’t look quite as white as they used to. Here are some answers to commonly asked questions about teeth whitening after your pearly whites have been cosmetically restored.

I’m planning to get veneers on my front teeth. However, the rest of my teeth are quite stained. How should I proceed?

Bleaching won’t alter the colour of your porcelain veneers so the time to whiten the adjacent teeth is before your dentist installs them. This way your veneers can be matched to the shade of the newly lightened teeth that surround them.

I’ve noticed staining on my porcelain veneers. Will a whitening toothpaste help?

Quite the opposite. Whitening toothpaste can actually cause staining of veneers and bonded teeth. This is because the sheen of veneers isn’t as strong as the enamel of real teeth so the abrasives in these pastes can lead to deterioration over time. Always check the box for harmful abrasives before your purchase. Or better yet, look for one that’s recommended for veneers.

How stain resistant is dental bonding?

Dental bonding is a fantastic way to enhance your smile, but it can be more prone to chipping and staining than other materials. Here are some tips to extend the life of your bonded teeth:

  • Brush and floss regularly

  • Steer clear of hard foods and candy

  • Avoid biting your nails and chewing on hard objects like pens or ice

  • Limit foods that stain including coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco

  • Schedule regular cleanings

I’ve had my veneers for several years and they’ve yellowed. What can I do?

Older veneers are typically made with a more porous material that can darken over time. Contemporary veneers are constructed using stain-resistant materials that are strong and long-lasting. If your veneers are over 20 years old, it might be time to replace them.
