You probably already know that frequently eating sugary foods can cause cavities and gum disease but did you know that consuming certain foods can improve your oral health? To keep your mouth healthy, make sure to include these seven things in your diet.
1. Kiwi fruit
This vine fruit is high in Vitamin C, which is essential for maintaining healthy gums. Without an adequate amount in your diet, the collagen in your gum tissue would break down, making it more tender and susceptible to disease. Eating anything high in Vitamin C is great for your oral health, and kiwis have a high concentration (59 milligrams per 100 grams).
2. Cheese
Dairy products such as cheese are rich in both phosphates and calcium, which can help re-mineralize the hard, outer layer of your tooth called the enamel. Strengthening your enamel protects your teeth from the damage caused by bacteria in your mouth.
3. Crunchy fruits and vegetables
Chewing hard fruits and vegetables helps your mouth produce more saliva, which helps wash away cavity-forming bacteria. Eating crunchy produce also massages your gums.
4. Orange vegetables
Consuming vegetables high in beta-carotene, especially carrots and sweet potatoes, helps your body produce Vitamin A , which promotes strong tooth enamel.
5. Leafy Greens
Green vegetables such as kale and spinach are high in calcium, which helps keep tooth enamel healthy. Leafy greens also contain folic acid, which can reduce the symptoms of gum disease in pregnant women.
6. Fish
Research indicates that regularly consuming the Omega-3 oils EPA and DHA can help reduce the risk of developing periodontitis. Mackerel, salmon and herring have the highest Omega-3 concentrations. You can also take cod liver oil.
7. Nuts
Eating nuts has many benefits. It promotes saliva production and provides essential vitamins and minerals that encourage good oral health such as calcium, potassium and zinc.
8. Raisins
Raisins contain phytochemicals that supress two species of bacteria in your mouth that contribute to tooth decay.
In addition to eating these foods, drinking water is great for your teeth and gums. Staying well-hydrated keeps every part of your body healthy, including your gums. Plus, drinking plenty of water will increase saliva production and rinse away any bits of food.
